A Wee Bit O' Irish History
Founded by Vikings in AD 988, the city of Dublin was named after an ancient stagnant lake in the city where the Scandinavians moored their ships. The dark lake was called Dubh Linn, which means "Black Pool." The original Dubh Linn lake was covered over and now lies under the gardens behind Dublin Castle, where it sometimes doubles as a landing pad for government helicopters.
