Kansas City Irish Fest News

Today I would like to write about another performer who will be on the Children's Stage at Irish Fest, Sharon Kennedy - Seanachie.

Sharon will be telling stories of the many Irish traditions.  Sharon Kennedy performs stories from around the world, but is best known for those drawn from the Irish oral tradition: tales of the "little people" and the fairy world, of shapeshifting seals known as "selchies" who can assume human form, of giants and wizards, and of magical encounters between ordinary people and extraordinary worlds.

She will be on the Children's Stage Saturday at 3:30 and Sunday at 11:15.

Sharon will also be performing on the Heritage Stage as her well-known character Mary Margaret O'Connell.  For this performance Sharon become Mary Margaret and tells of a young, Irish immigrant who has come to Massachusetts for a new chance at life.  This character is so amazing that she has told her tale on ABC's "Good Morning America" and on NPR.  Her story will come to life on the Heritage Stage on Saturday at 1:00.

I would check her out on both stages because they will be unique, informative, and entertaining.  Actually, I plan on doing exactly that (seems that I am going to be doing quite a bit of stage hopping)!

Irish Trivia

Despite the reputation the Irish have for throwing cheerful wakes that are more like a party for the deceased, the tradition of keening is sometimes still practiced.  Keening is a type of loud crying, wailing, and proclaiming endearments in Gaelic for the lost loved one, and the noisy, heartfelt bereavement may include many participants and continue for hours.

She has since received numerous accolades and awards for both. Kristi travels all over the country and internationally to paint for exclusive clients, and she has also had a book published featuring her unique designs. Her talents are mainly focused here in Kansas City by magically transforming people one face at a time. She has been happily painting for the Kansas City Irish Festival since 2007, and looks forward to it every year.

Here are some of the designs that The Embellished Body, the artists doing henna and glitter tattoos, have designed for Irish Fest.  They will also have their normal pieces available like flowers, swirls, paisley, etc.  I like the shamrocks with shirls.  What will you get done?

I am so sorry I forgot to publish this yesterday.  I wrote it in the morning with the thought of the day, but my forgetfulness knows no bounds and I forgot to publish it in the afternoon.  I can not believe that I am getting more absent-minded with Irish Fest only a few days away.

I mentioned before that we are happy to have henna artwork available this year.  Henna is an art form that lasts for several weeks.  It is drawn on you, so it doesn't hurt or anything.  It is just the ink is special and lasts on the skin.  We are going to require that kids under 13 have a parent with them who approves of this form of art.  Also, please make sure your hobbies or school will not object - or just have it done somewhere you can cover up easily!  Here is the bio of the artist and some pictures of henna styles.  Tomorrow I will give you some examples of the designs the henna artist and glitter artist came up with for Irish Fest.

Sheryl has been creating henna body art since 2000. She has always been interested in and excited about body adornment, leading her to create clothing, wings, jewelry and costumes. It also led her to face painting and henna art which became an enduring passion. In addition to tattoo-style designs, she can also create designs in many of the traditional styles, such as Indian, Arabic, Gulf or Moroccan styles. Sheryl always makes her henna paste personally from scratch, using all natural ingredients.

Kansas City Irish Fest News

Today, I am not so much going to write about Irish Fest.  Or I am, just not in a news theme.  Today is bigger for me (granted maybe only me) than news.  Today, I need to share a story of my morning.  Sorry for the length.

First, one detail of the story that I have a slew of health setbacks.  These setbacks have caused more limitations on my life that I would not want to burden anyone with knowing or understanding.  I am currently, for my own determination, trying to slowly overcome while accepting at the same time.

One of the ways for me to try and overcome is to attempt morning walks.  Now, these often do not go so well.  Sadly enough, my limitations have left me taking pride in being able to make it a block away.  I have to set my standards and goals by how many houses I make it away from my house, not how many miles.  I have steeled myself against being paranoid as to what my neighbors might think about some heavy-set girl who can't even make it a block away from home.  I know the truth of my limitations and I have learned to steel myself against what others might think - no small feat if I do say so myself.  Oh, and it is important to know that I listen to music while I walk.  I have it set on random through my thousands of songs and I hope I get uplifting music, but I also like to try and sing to my music.  It helps me to ignore what others might think of me.

Today, I was walking away and I made it far by my own limitations, but I was really striving for slightly further.  I turned around, defeated, and was almost back in my own yard when an Irish song played.

This song was instrumental and it was mostly the fiddler whom I heard.  The song began slow and melancholy.  Naturally, I started crying for the Irish know sadness and grief.  As I got to my house, I leaned against my car to let the music carry my mood.  Suddenly, the beat picked up and the song grew into more.

As another side note, when I was a freshman in college, I made friends with a woman named Colleen.  She was an Irish dancer through and through.  She was one who celebrated life to a degree that I was just starting to learn through her.  Having never seen or tried Irish dancing, I was in awe of someone who had gotten to perform all her life.  Anyway, I will never forget when she tried to teach me a few basic steps.  And, although I never quite got them right to her standards (Irish dancing is a rigorous endeavor), I felt giddy for having a new facet of being Irish.

Therefore, like I always do when I hear the right tempo of Irish music and as I am resting against the car, as the music turned celebratory, my feet starting doing those steps I learned.  Granted, they are probably worse than when Colleen was teaching me because time can fog over the details, but my feet were dancing nonetheless.

As I realize my feet were moving and the spirit of the music was hitting me, I smiled.  Crying my eyes out, I was suddenly hit with so much joy that I was born anew.  With the song carrying me, I made it around a shorter, different block.  But around it I went!  With every step and every beat, my tears switched from melancholy to joy.  I was still crying, but this time out of pride and joy.  How Irish is that...both despair and joy combine in one powerful moment!!!

A Irish song.  A memory.  Happy feet.  You may hit a low place and Irish music may find your grief.  However, it can just as easily and instantly pull you out of that slump and put you someplace better than where you were before.  I look forward to having the bands at Irish Fest make me feel all of this and so much more.

Thank you Colleen, thank you Celtic Woman, thank you God for giving me this moment to treasure.

If I only had a name...

Hi, I am the newly born cow that will be representing Kansas City Irish Fest in a very important year, a tenth birthday celebration.  Since it is my birthday as the representative of Irish Fest, we get to celebrate our birthdays together.  Although I will miss Céilí because she has been a great celebration of Irish by sharing so much with you over the past year.  I only hope I can live up to her example.  But, I think you might know what I am going to ask of you next.  I need my name.  In order to celebrate life, I need someone to give me a name.  I think we are shooting for a name that is representative of an Irish cow standing proudly for Kansas City Irish Fest's 10th anniversary celebration.  Also, in case you haven't noticed, because this is such a big year for Irish Fest, I brought a friend.  This royal bird has been showing me the ropes of Kansas City.  In fact, the bird agreed to stay with me and help me reign in the year to come.  So, it would be nice if the bird got a name too.  Just write the cow - ????? and bird - ????? on your sheets.

Oh, one more thing...because we could not find an awesome enough cow to present to the winner, this year the person who names me gets 10 cows.  We have found 10 smaller cows to represent each cow of the past.  They are each unique.  You will be able to see them displayed next to the box for the name entries.  Thank you all for thinking of me and my name.

The joy of the Irish Fest Kid's Club

Yesterday, I got to be a small part of the Irish Fest Kid's Club final hurrah before the festival.  I was humbled and amazed as I witnessed the excitement and hard work of the kids and parents.  Even as the kids were being told how some of their ideas were being put into play, they were full of more ideas.  As they were told the goal of each tent and each area, the kids still had suggestions on small improvements and things to keep in mind for each area with the thoughts of fun and safety for all in the forefront of their minds.

After all of the details of each area were discussed, it was time to get to business.  These kids did not bat an eye at the work ahead of them.  They just plowed forward.  There was pricing and organizing of merchandise (some of which are way awesome).  There was putting prizes in the pinatas (the candy had to wait).  There was organizing boxes and labeling the boxes so everything can easily be put where it belongs.  There was organizing the crafts materials.  There was checking of bingo to make sure everything was there.  The kids excitedly worked through it all.

The Kid's Club t-shirts say "future board member" on the back.  I believe whole-heartedly that each one of these kids will be running the Irish Fest in years to come.  They are a dedicated bunch.  They love their Irish heritage.  And I would like to thank each one of them for that hard work.

Oh, and as a final comment...it was agreed by all that the new potato tattoo strangely resembles the face of a certain someone of another blog area who might have had hand in the design.  Laughs and fun abounded over this (wink, wink..hint, hint to a certain hard-working and infinitely fun someone)!

Oh Danny boy, the pipes, the pipes are calling
From glen to glen, and down the mountain side
The summer's gone, and all the flowers are dying
'Tis you, 'tis you must go and I must bide.
But come ye back when summer's in the meadow
Or when the valley's hushed and white with snow
'Tis I'll be here in sunshine or in shadow
Oh Danny boy, oh Danny boy, I love you so.

Irish Food

Coddle

This hearty, satisfying, and inexpensive meal is a stew of pork sausage chunks and bacon with sliced potatoes, onions, and sometimes barley.  Coddle is associated with Dublin.  It was supposedly a favorite dish of Jonathan Swift, and the dish is referenced in several works, including the books of James Joyce.  The term comes from the slow simmering of the dish, and is often eaten in the winter months.  Traditionally, the recipe called for the addition of a small amount of Guinness to the mix.

I just found out some exciting news.   This year, we will have a Teen Area linked to the Children's Area.  What sets the teen area apart you ask?  Well, this area will have four unique points of interest.  First, the area will be equipped with Guitar Hero, so everyone can rock out and be a musician for a song.  Second, there will be a rock climbing area available.  Third, there will be a bungee jumping area available.  These two activities can make one's heart race with excitement.  Finally, there will be an area with a deejay, who will be rocking music so people can dance.

This area sounds like quite a party to me.  I hope I am invited.

Irish Folklore

The Burren

I know I mentioned this place before as one of Ireland's natural wonders, but I was so interested in the place that I read more about it.

Located in County Clare, the Burren is fifty square miles of bleak, irregular slabs of deeply cracked limestone, unspoiled since the Ice Age, when the glaciers sheared off the soil and carved up the rock.  The name is from the Gaelic bhoireann, meaning "stony place."  This damp, spooky moonscape is home to plants from various, far-flung climates all growing together.  There are a number of prehistoric grave sites, forts, and megalithic tombs, with relics of human habitation dating back almost 6,000 years.  Beneath the jagged rock surface, spectacular caves have been found.  Legends connected to the Burren suggest that its sacred wells cure weak vision, its caves are inhabited by spirit horsemen, and its mysterious lakes move around the landscape without warning.

I am happy today to have a story from the head of the Children's Area.  She has been working Irish Fest for 10 years.  She loves every single person who walks into her area.  She works hard, but she knows she is repaid with every smile she sees on Labor Day weekend.  I wish I could have you all give a round of applause to her...

Reminiscing Irish Fest

The Children's area never got opened that first year of Irish Fest and the opening of it headed down the river in the flood.
I remember Uncle Bloggy took me to Crown Center to talk about the new venue and what the Children's Area should be.

Frankly, the board was 150% committed to the idea of a Children's Area, but didn't have a clue as to the success of attracting young guests to the Fest. I think the words I remember from Uncle Bloggy were, " We are a Family Fest", but we didn't know what that was for the children outside the terrific music each year.

That first year, Hallmark gave us help from Kaleidoscope, we got a hold of one really excellent FacePainter. And we made coloring sheets and a few games. We were in a 10 x 20 tent in a spot on the street where we leaned a little. Nobody minded and Sunday when we shut down, I got the numbers that we entertained and in that small little tent, 6100 guests.

The Irish Fest Committee and Board were absolutely overwhelmed, personally, I was in shock for almost a month when I started planning the next fest.

10 years later after a no-opening and an incredible first year, the Children's area has two Villages, one on the Terrace and one in the Park. Both areas have Face Painting. We will have 8 Painters, 2 Glitter Tattoo Artists, and 2 Henna Painters on board this year. And as a special addition, the Face Painting area in the Park will be open until 11 PM for the teens and young people and those of us who remember being young and love to have Henna, Painting and Glitter (I will have one of each).

We have a teen area this year, complete with Guitar Hero, a wonderful DJ, and rock climbing. The park for the young folks has Oddball Kids, a bubble tent, and lots of bouncies.

The terrace is equipped with an exciting stage schedule, Bingo, Wackalaylees and Mr and Mrs Irish Potato Head crafts.

We need volunteers, we love teens ages 15 and above to help us and accumulate service hours.

So, join us as a guest, a volunteer, I promise lots of smiles.

Here we have another example of the works of art one of our face painters has created.  If you go on the website listed at the bottom of each photo, you can actually look at a gallery of faces that she has created.  They gave me ideas for what I might want to get at Irish Fest.  Alas, I was unable to get some words from her.  However, I hope you all gathered that no matter which artist is painting your face, you will look amazing!

A Wee Bit O' Irish History

1558-1603

Elizabeth I reigned as Queen of Ireland.  Under her rule, the Policy of Plantation began, in which Irish lands were systematically seized and colonized by Scottish and English Protestants.

Kansas City Irish Fest News

Today we have another installment of...knowing the artists who make our faces works of art at Irish Fest.  I love that Laura respects and celebrates the Irish culture just because she is caught up in the fun, not because of her family.  I love those who find interest in knowing more about the place from where their ancestors started, AND those who enjoy what another culture has to offer.  In one of the posts of the day, a movie The Commitments was mentioned.  This movie is about a group of Irish people who find a bit of themselves in a music that hails from a different part of the world.  Likewise, we welcome and celebrate when anyone with any origin finds something to admire about the Irish!

Hi, I'm Laura Oliver with Face Fancies Face Painting here in the Overland Park, Kansas City Area.  I am so thrilled to be able to be part of the festivities of the annual Irish Festival this year.  I have been painting for almost two and a half years and have longed to be a part of the festival since I first heard about it!   It's been so fun to get to know and work with some of the great and enthusiastic painters in the area which is another reason why I look forward to working at Irish Fest this year.  St. Patrick's Day was always one of my favorite holidays growing up, and even though I'm not Irish by birth, I seem to naturally love shamrocks, rainbows and leprechans----even the color green is one of my all time favorites.  Pots of Gold aren't bad either!  So please, come in and join us---and let one of our accomplished painters decorate your face in the true spirit of Irish Fest to add some fun and flair to your experience of Irish Fest this year!

Kansas City Irish Fest News

Today, I would like to take the time to write about another fun event that happens in the Children's Area and that is the Wack-a-laylee.
This exciting escapade is what we call having a few swings at our yearly piñata.  This year the piñatas, or wack-a-laylees, were crafted to represent our theme of potato.  In years past, I have held the wack-a-laylee while others are taking swings at it, I have taken swings at it, and I have beheld the fun that ensues when the treasures come bursting out.  Each time, no matter what role I play, I always get enveloped in the fun.  I cheer for every girl and boy who attempt, I cheer for who breaks it open, and I cheer as all rush to get some goodies that burst out.  This event is one that everyone enjoys.  Parents and friends are just as excited to watch the event and people are in participating.  In other words, a time of fun, joy, cheering, and presents!

These joyous events happen about every 2 hours or so throughout the weekend.  There will be a big sign in the Children's Area that will have all of the starting times written on it.  There will also be an announcement telling everyone where to line up when the event gets started.

I wish you all luck.  I am also hoping that I get to take a swing this year, and maybe crack one open for the first time!!

Today, I am going to talk about one of the activities that happens in the Children's Area all weekend...Kansas City Irish Fest Bingo!!!!

Bingo games are played all weekend in the main children's area tent.  The games are approximately every few hours.  There will be a sign with specific times for games at Irish Fest.  The bingo cards are unique in that they are made up of pictures celebrating all things Irish.  One of my favorite things that happens during the game is that for the pictures that some might not know, the bingo callers might tell a short blurb or story detailing the history or meaning of the pictures.  For example, a picture might be of Brian Boru and the bingo caller will tell you a simple story about him.

And, the games are played until there are a few winners with Bingo.  The winners get kid's club dollars to spend on a fun Irish something at the children's area shop.

So, a little bit of games, a little bit of learning about all things Irish, and a reward for the winners.  Sounds like a fun way to take a small break (by sitting, relaxing, and playing a game) from running around and being a part of all the action at Irish Fest to me.

Irish Thought for August 12...

The Fairies by William Allingham

Up the airy mountain
Down the rushy glen,
We dare n't go a-hunting,
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather.
Down along the rocky shore
Some make their home,
They live on crispy pancakes
Of yellow tide-foam;
Some in the reeds
Of the black mountain-lake,
With frogs for their watch-dogs,
All night awake.
High on the hill-top
The old King sits;
He is now so old and gray
He's nigh lost his wits.
With a bridge of white mist
Columbkill he crosses,
On his stately journeys
From Slieveleague to Rosses;
Or going up with music,
On cold starry nights,
To sup with the Queen,
Of the gay Northern Lights.
They stole little Bridget
For seven years long;
When she came down again
Her friends were all gone.
They took her lightly back
Between the night and morrow;
They thought she was fast asleep,
But she was dead with sorrow.
They have kept her ever since
Deep within the lake,
On a bed of flag leaves,
Watching till she wake.
By the craggy hill-side,
Through the mosses bare,
They have planted thorn trees
For pleasure here and there.
Is any man so daring
As dig them up in spite?
He shall find the thornies set
In his bed at night.
Up the airy mountain
Down the rushy glen,
We dare n't go a-hunting,
For fear of little men;
Wee folk, good folk,
Trooping all together;
Green jacket, red cap,
And white owl's feather

A Wee Bit O' Irish History

St. Brendan of Kerry (484-578)

Much-disputed legend holds that he voyaged to North America in the sixth century with a group of monks.  Petroglyphs of Ogham writings, or alphabetical representations of Gaelic languages, have been found in West Virginia and New Mexico, lending weight to this theory.

Plus, I would say that if petroglyphs were found in those places, then St. Brendan and his group made it, at least, almost all the way across North America too.  Even when settlers from Europe began making their way in North America, it was still quite awhile before anyone started venturing inland.  That is why the 13 original colonies were all pretty much on the eastern seaboard.  Living in that new area was hard enough without adding travel into the mix.

Kansas City Irish Fest News

I was going to save talking about one of my favorite people who will be at Irish Fest this year because...well...I am so excited for him to be at our festival that I was letting the excitement build.  But, with a day of stress both behind and still ahead of me today, I decided I would relax and write about Barry FitzGerald.

Before I talk about Barry, I think it is important to mention that I remember ghosts as being scary but fun to hear about when I was younger.  Although I am still not sure that I am a solid believer in ghosts, the Ghost Hunters' investigations have provided me with insight as to new ways to think about the events.  Sometimes, unseen energy causing strange noises or movements might be as simple as the person who died's energy repeating familiar actions that might be what that person did when alive, like an echo.  I have never seen an episode where anyone was afraid of what might be lurking.  Instead, they try and find rational reasons for an occurrence.  If that fails, they try talking to a spirit that might be present.  They search for clues as to who is causing the occurrences and why that spirit might be performing them.  There is no fear of danger (although who doesn't jump when something unexpected happens), just a mission to understand or verify what is happening.

I have been watching Barry on Sy-Fy's Ghost Hunters International for as long as he has been on the show.  I remember seeing him introduced because of his research he had been doing on a castle in Ireland when the original GHI team arrived to investigate.  Even when he was first introduced, Barry was well on the road of using different types of cameras to find spirits, like a camera that sees hot and cold spots.  He was determined to show that what might not be seen with our eyes might not be able to hide from cameras that see with a different view.  His knowledge of the cameras led to him starting on the GHI team as a tech expert.  However, it was not long before his expertise led him to be one of the two main investigators on the team.  One of the reasons that I am such a fan is because Barry often stops and just listens relying on his own senses to lead him in the direction that might provide evidence or answers.  I respect one who has such a dual respect for technology and his own experience to guide him.  And...girl-y as it might be...who can help but be warmed and calmed by an Irish accent?!?!!

Also, speaking from the experience of the last time Barry was at Kansas City Irish Fest, the man knows his Irish history.  He was just as ready to talk about the history as he was about his experiences on his ghost adventures, both of which I find exciting to follow.

Barry will be telling of his adventures on the Heritage Stage Saturday at 6:00 p.m.  We are also lucky to have him on the Children's Stage on Saturday at 12:30 and again on Sunday at 6:00.  I hope many of you will be there to listen.  I know I will!

Natural Wonders of Ireland

The Burren

Burren means "rocky land" in Gaelic.  This wonder of Ireland is found in County Clare.  Look for the pearl-bordered fritillary (a butterfly) and the hoary rook rose (a flower).  A general under the not-so-nice-to-the-Irish Oliver Cromwell described the area this way:  "A savage land, yielding neither water enough to drown a man, nor tree to hang him, nor soil enough to bury." (Ahh, the eloquent words of war-trod brutes).  The nearby village of Doolin is known for its traditional music.

Soe of the rock formations along the area with grass trying to grow anywhere it can take root.

I am excited today to talk about our artists who transform all who seek a new look for the day.  I saw many a face last year was a work of art.  Here is what our face artist Amy Lowe-Smith says about herself....

 I have been painting for eleven years. My favorite event every year is Irish Fest, I get a chance to paint, be a part of great culture, the best Irish music and do it all with some of my best friends. I also stock up on my favorite Irish teas and eat all the Cadbury I can for the weekend! When I am not painting I have two beautiful daughters and am married. I teach Special Education durring the week and love being a teacher and painter.

These are some examples of work she has done for boys and girls.  Aren't you excited to have your face made unique??!?!!

Here we have another example of the temporary tattoos that will be available at Irish Fest this year.  We have to give props to our potato theme being represented.  Is it just me or does anyone else look at a potato with a face and start singing the song (in my head, thankfully) from the commercial for Mr. Potato Head?  Do you know the song?  Something along the lines of Mr. Potato Head and his bucket of parts.  Buckets of fun for everyone!

Because we are nearing the time for Kansas City Irish Fest 2012, I have decided to start dual-daily posts.  The first will remain a bit of the Irish for us all.  The second will be news on how Irish Fest 2012 is developing!

I know I have mentioned it before, but I would like to start in talking about the Kids' Area theme:  the Potato.  This crop has historically been and currently is an important part of Ireland.  We will be seeking many ways to incorporate this theme into the Kids' Area this year!

Created by Gilbeys of Ireland, Baileys Irish Cream was introduced to the international market in 1974 and has since become the most popular liqueur worldwide.  The mixture of Irish whiskey and cream is also the best-selling duty-free liquer brand, and ranks seventh globally among all premium spirit brands.  The name of the liqueur is not based on anyone specific - the name Baileys was chosen for its international marketing appeal.

Irish Proverbs

The well fed does not understand the lean.

This is a proverb that resonates with many people today.  Not long ago, there were people across the country protesting for a variety of reasons, but with the thought that it is 99% of Americans (those with lower incomes) versus the 1% (the wealthy) because the wealthy own the government and the institutions that are keeping the rest down.  It has come again to the forefront because presidential candidate Mitt Romney is in the 1% and some think that Mitt will only work towards helping that group of Americans.  If you want to think about politics facing the nation, I encourage you to keep this proverb in your mind.  Ask yourself whether or not you believe it has merit.
